The Yeomanry

Captain in Levee Dress 1893

This oil painting was sold at auction by Bosleys of Marlow on 3 Mar 2010 as a Portrait of an Officer of the Warwickshire Yeomanry but it could be Francis Greville, Lord Brooke who became the Earl of Warwick. The uniform is the levee order which included the dress tunic and tight pantaloons with patent leather Hessian boots that were edged around the top with silver gimp and a coiled oval boss. The tunic can be seen to have a double line of cord edging down the front and along the hem. The cuffs are white with silver cord forming an Austrian knot. This is traced around with small circlets of silver braid, more visible on his left arm. The black fur busby has silver caplines which are brought around under the left arm to form a plaited loop on the upper right breast. The plaited loop style was introduced c1893. Also in that year the double silver stripes that we can see on this officer's pantaloons was replaced by a single stripe of silver vellum lace one inch wide with silver Russia braid traced down either side. The photo of Lord Willoughby de Broke shows him in levee dress with these pantaloons.
