The Yeomanry

Officers in Mess Dress 1901

The Navy and Army Illustrated published a 3 page article on the Warwickshire Yeomanry in July 1901 and included this photo of the officers who remained in Britain while their 5th Company IY was in South Africa. The field officers sit at the front with their elaborately braided cuffs on show, while the junior officers stand at the back. The Commandant is the Marquess of Hertford, with a white beard, and amongst the other seated officers are, Major the Earl of Warwick on his right hand, the adjutant Captain R C Stephen, and Major Rowland Beech on the rght. Another future Commandant, Major Frank Dugdale, stands on the left of the photo. Captain Stephen was from the 3rd Hussars and wears a different mess dress. Two of the officers standing next to Major Dugdale are Captains and they can be seen to have small circlets of silver braid formed around the gimp loop on their cuffs. One officer standing at the back, named as Second Lieut Phillips, has a very tall collar. The officer wearing a pouchbelt is the orderly officer and is in stable dress which is of the pattern of stable/mess jacket worn previous to 1896.
