This photo is in the possession of the Cape Town Highlanders. It is Captain Robert Granger who raised a Scottish regiment in Cape Town 20 years before the Cape Town Highlanders. An article in the Journal for the Society for Army Historical Research Vol 39, no.159 (Sep 1961) by J J Hulme, describes the uniform, although there was a lack of uniformity in the unit, and Captain Granger’s dress may have been particular to him. The jacket is a blend of Scottish doublet and Rifle pattern; dark green with black braid. The kilt was of the Campbell of Argyll hunting tartan which had a prominent yellow line. The body plaid did not match the kilt. There is a badge on his pouch-belt which resembles that of the Cape Royal Rifles. His bonnet has a tall eagle feather and a badge with the Argyll boar’s head. The original intention was to raise a Highland Company to be part of the CRR, but Granger’s Company was initially so popular that they had enough recruits to form the separate Scottish Volunteer Rifle Corps. It was disbanded in 1864.
