These badges replaced the thistle badges worn since 1885. The officers and other ranks wore the same pattern, either gilt brass or bimetal, of differing quality. The arrows and lions face inwards when attached to the collar. This design was also worn as the collar badge of the 4th South African Infantry Regiment in WW1. Volunteers from the Cape Town Highlanders formed A Company. But instead of CAPE TOWN HIGHLANDERS the scroll on the badges had the Latin motto MORS LUCRUM MUHI (death is my reward).
