The sporrans worn by privates and corporals appear to have had no badge or decoration until 1902 when this shield was placed in the centre of the cantle. It is identical to the sporran badge worn by the men of the Gordon Highlanders. The stag’s head and coronet with the motto BYDAND (steadfast).
