The photo was taken on Sunday 31 Jan 1886 on the Grand Parade, Cape Town, the occasion being the first Church Parade for the CTH. It was at St Andrews Church, the service conducted by the regimental chaplain, the Rev John Russell. The men were in full dress, without rifles, and numbered 164 including the pipe band. The seven officers stand at the front: Captain J Scott, Capt W Thompson, Capt C W Smith, and Lieutenants Brodie, Brown, Christison and Rawbone. The parade attracted the attention of many young men who were encouraged to join them. By the end of February they had swelled their numbers to more than 30.
