Major Huseyin Avni

Major Huseyin Avni was the Commander of the 57th Regiment. This regiment was rushed up quickly to help stem the flow of the Australians at Lone Pine. The 57th launched a critical assault to recapture hill Baby 700 and the northern slopes of Russell's Top. They sustained terrible casualties but their counterattack certainly helped confine the Australians to the lower ground and kept the Turkish in the all important higher positions.
