This painting by M A Hayes is of an unnamed young ensign of the 25th. He has the Queen’s Colour beside him and there are figures in the background. Around this time the regiment served in South Africa and the landscape may reflect that. He has epaulettes so would have been a battalion company officer, but the ball tuft on his shako should be white over red instead of all white. The rectangular gilt shoulder-belt plate is the earlier version before the ornate rococo-style plate was introduced.
