George Hewat was born around 1851 at All Hallows Wall, Middlesex, the son of Thomas Hewat and Dorothea Eliza Fitzgerald. George married Lucy Elizabeth Nowell-Usticke and had 10 children. One child, Frances Constance Hewat, was born in Berwick, Northumberland in 1887. There is another spouse mentioned in the Ancestry website; Dora Louise.
He entered the 1st Battalion of the 25th King’s Own Borderers on 27 Sep 1871 as an ensign when the battalion was posted to Ireland. He was appointed Adjutant of the 3rd Volunteer Battalion at Dumfries on 12 July 1887, and Second-in-Command of the 1st Battalion on 26 June 1896. The photo shows him in that appointment at Aldershot in 1897. He was appointed Commanding Officer of the 2nd Battalion on 3 December 1898 and sailed out to India to take command. He retired in December 1902 and died on 28 March 1907.
