John Henry Hickman Spence Drew Hogarth

John Henry Hickman Spence Drew Hogarth was born in 1846 and entered the 2nd Battalion, 25th King’s Own Borderers as an ensign on 5 Mar 1867. He temporarily served with the 1st Battalion in the Afghan War of 1878-79, with the Peshawar Valley Field Force under the command of General Maude. On his promotion to major in 1885 he transferred permanently to the 1st Battalion. He was appointed to the command of the 1st Battalion on 1 Jan 1894. The battalion had returned from India in February 1891 and was stationed at Devonport, and was in York when Lt-Col Hogarth took command. The photo shows him in a patrol jacket and forage cap, photographed in Aldershot in 1897. He held the rank of lieutenant-colonel when he retired on half pay on 1 Jan 1898. He died in 1929.
