Terence Cuneo’s painting of the battle of Killiecrankie shows the Highlanders about to force their way into the ranks of General Mackay’s men organised into ‘plattons’. In the foreground are some artillery. The Williamite army had managed to bring three 3‑pounder ‘leather guns’ to the battle and during the day these had fired a few ineffective rounds at the Jacobites as they kept their distance from each other. Two commanders can be seen, mounted on horseback. On the left of the picture, Dundee, wearing a hat, inspires his men on a grey horse. The hatless figure behind the ranks of the Royalist army bears a resemblance to the portrait of the Earl of Leven but is probably meant to be Major‑General Hugh Mackay.
