The recruiting area of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers covers the Scottish counties closest to the border with England. According to Regiments and the Corps of the British Army by Ian S. Hallows (New Orchard Edition 1994) the recruiting area covered the Borders and Dumfries & Galloway (Berwickshire, Selkirkshire, Roxburghshire, Wigtownshire and Lanarkshire). This map is taken from the Esavian Modern School Atlas published in the 1950s. These counties existed throughout most of the 20th century and the latter part of the 19th. Dumfries and Galloway now covers Wigtownshire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Dumfriesshire.
The regiment was originally called the Edinburgh Regiment and retains the castle on its badge but recruitment around Edinburgh (the Lothians) was traditionally confined to the Royal Scots. The KOSB shares Lanarkshire and Glasgow with the Cameronians.
