Boughton’s Memorial


The men of the Imperial Yeomanry subscribed to a brass plaque placed on the wall of St Peter’s Church, Lodsworth, West Sussex. It is topped by the King’s Crown and the letters IY: Sacred to the Memory of JOHN CHARLES BOUGHTON Aged 24, Only Son of C and S Boughton of Netherlands, Tillington. He served with the 34th Company Middlesex Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa from March 1900 to April 1901, and was Drowned Whilst Attempting to Save a Comrade at Clocolan, April 2 1901. — 'Greater Love hath no man than this. That a man lay down his Own Life for His Friends.' — Erected by His Comrades.
