Major-General Alfred Wintle


Alfred Wintle was born on 18 Aug1822 and attended Rugby School during the headmastership of Dr Matthew Arnold. He entered the East India Company’s army as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Bengal Artillery in 1843 and was present at the battle of Maharajpoor in Dec 1843. He was also at Sobraon in the First Sikh War and gained the rank of lieutenant-colonel in 1861. When the EIC forces were transferred to the crown he went onto the staff of the Royal Horse Artillery, in 1862. He retired with the rank of major-general in 1872 and died on 16 April 1878 in Eastbourne. He was married to Helen Login on 28 Oct 1845 in Bombay; they had a daughter and four sons.
