Lieutenant Shadwell Morley Grylls


Shadwell Morley Grylls of Lewarne was born on 11 Feb 1831. He was the son of Henry Grylls and Ellen Boulderson. He entered the army as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery on 19 Dec 1848. This photo was taken in the Crimea by Roger Fenton in 1855 when Grylls, aged 24, was an officer in ‘C’ Battery. On 21 April 1863 he was married to Isabella Ellen Buller and they had 6 children, four of which had the name Bere Grylls. Three children died in infancy. He reached the rank of lieutenant-colonel and died on 14 Mar 1895. There is a memorial to him where he is buried at St Neot Churchyard, Cornwall. Shadwell’s father, Henry, was the brother of the great great great great grandfather of the ex-SAS adventurer and TV personality Edward Michael ‘Bear’ Grylls.
