Janna Scantlebury


Janna Scantlebury. from Bow, East London, was the first black woman to serve in the King’s Troop RHA. She joined the army in 2001 and overcame her fear of horses in basic training which included military studies in Harrogate, and at the age of 19, was picked for guard duty at Buckingham Palace. Her horse Hackney she describes as ‘lovely, just but a bit naughty sometimes’. She left the army in June 2006 after five and a half years service and now works as a Finance Assistant at Morrison FS Ltd.

Women have served in the King’s Troop RHA since 1996. The first woman was Kerry Fletcher whose army career ended after suffering sexual harassment for which she was awarded compensation in 2007. In the same year Major Erica Bridge became the first female officer to command the King’s Troop at St John’s Wood.
