Sergeant John Dickson

John Dickson was an exemplary and long-serving sergeant in the Rocket Troop, in which he had served at Waterloo as a gunner. He wears the Waterloo medal in this portrait painted by A-J Dubois Drahonet in 1832. His rank stripes are worn on both arms and on his left sleeve is a special embroidered badge above the chevrons. This is the shield of the Arms of the Board of Ordnance. Just visible on the right arm is part of a crown badge. He has a crimson sash around his waist, a distinction of RHA sergeants. The sword is kept in a scabbard attached to the wide leather shoulder-belt. In 1834 this was discontinued and replaced by a waist-belt. The cords attached near his left shoulder are the cap-lines coming from under his right arm and attached to his bell-topped shako. His corded close-fitting jacket is dark blue with scarlet facings. His trousers are mid-blue with a red stripe down the outside.
