Lance Bombardier Stephen Restorick


Stephen Restorick was the last British soldier to be killed by IRA paramilitaries in Northern Ireland. He was shot by sniper Bernard McGinn on 12 Feb 1997 as he manned a checkpoint in Bessbrook, South Armagh. Lance-Bombardier Restorick was with the 3rd Regiment RHA which had been in Northern Ireland for 5 months. It was claimed that his death could have been prevented and that he was sacrificed to save an informer.

Stephen, from Underwood, Nottinghamshire was 23 when he was shot down. His killer was a particularly dangerous man who was found guilty of multiple murders and bomb plots, and sentenced to 490 years in prison. However, he was released after 16 months as part of the Good Friday Agreement.
