Mounted Trumpeter c1880

This painting of a Horse Artillery trumpeter is signed but not dated. There are clues to the date to narrow it down. The white gauntlets are unusual, not seen on other images of RHA trumpeters. This would suggest that it is a fairly early depiction. It is certainly after 1871, the year knee boots and breeches replaced leathered trousers. The sword is slung from a white waist-belt with the scabbard rings in the pre-1885 position. In that year cavalry and artillery were issued with scabbards having fixed rings either side. He wears the dress jacket, but an undress pill-box forage cap.
