Mounted Trumpeter 1883

The trumpeter in this 1883 photo is in marching order, wearing the pre-1888 tall busby with a plume. His dress jacket has two gold lace good conduct stripes on the left forearm; before 1881 they were on the right arm. His horse has a valise on the back of the saddle, which is not used in review order. The black sheepskin covers his rolled cloak on the front as well as the valise on the back. The sword scabbard is the pre-1885 type, slung from a waist-belt hidden under his jacket. The horse does not have the draught harness strap around its breast, but is harnessed purely for riding.
