Officer and Trumpeter c1897

Harry Payne’s postcard illustration is of a section commander of subaltern rank being shadowed by his trumpeter. The rolled cloak on the front of the trumpeter’s saddle is no longer covered by a sheepskin, this was discontinued for other ranks in 1896 along with the valise. His sword is attached to the saddle, although the officers continued to suspend the sword from a waist-belt.
