This was the tantalising view glimpsed by the New Zealand Wellington Battalion of the narrows ahead. They were commanded by Lieutenant Colonel William Malone who led them to the very summit of Chunuk Bair but whose forces were fiercely attacked by Turks before supporting Allied troops could reinforce them. Malone himself may well have been killed by friendly fire in the process. |
