The Westcountry Walker: Hiking Through History

Wladyslaw Mazurek

Wladyslaw Mazurek

In 1938, my grandfather Władysław Mazurek completed his national service training in the Polish Cavalry, a proud and historic branch of Poland’s military tradition. The photograph from that year captures him in uniform, framed by symbols of national pride—an eagle, a tank, a battleship, and a horse-mounted soldier—reflecting both his personal commitment and the broader martial heritage of interwar Poland.

At the time, Poland stood precariously between two rising powers. Within a year, the country would be invaded by Nazi Germany from the west and the Soviet Union from the east, under the terms of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact. Like many Polish servicemen, Władysław Mazurek was swept into the chaos of World War II, enduring the dislocation and uncertainty that followed the collapse of the Polish state.

After the war, returning to Poland was not an option. The country had fallen under Soviet control, and many former soldiers—especially those who had fought alongside the Allies—faced persecution, imprisonment, or forced “re-education” under the new Communist regime. Władysław, like thousands of others, found refuge in Britain through the Polish Resettlement Scheme of 1947, the first mass migration programme of its kind in British history.

The scheme offered Polish veterans and their families housing, education, and employment opportunities. Władysław settled in Britain and found work at Devonport Dockyard, contributing to the postwar rebuilding effort. Though he could not return to his homeland, he built a life in the UK marring my grandmother (below) taking up work at Devonport Dockyard in Plymouth, carrying with him the memory of service, sacrifice, and the loss of a free Poland.
