Punch was so sure Khartoum had been relieved that on February, 1885 it depicted Gordon greeting his rescuer, Sir Herbert Stewart (below). But the following week. after learning that the two men were dead. it humbly published an illustration showing a distraught Britannia before the fallen city (above).
