Wall Street, New Amsterdam

This is an interesting picture illustrating the English capture of New Amersterdam from the Dutch in 1664. Wall street can clearly be seen. It had originally been designed to keep the English (and Indians) out of the Dutch colony but was now being used by the English for defence of their latest acquisition. The Dutch did take the colony back but were willing to trade it back to the English in return for sugar colonies in Guyana which were felt to be far more profitable!
