Officers 1879

The officers of the 10th Hussars pose informally in a camp somewhere in Afghanistan. None of these officers succumbed to the cholera epidemic that struck the regiment on the march back to India in June 1879. Some of them are recognisable; the CO, Lord Ralph Kerr sits in the middle with a dog lying near his left foot. Sitting on the ground wearing a helmet is Lieut Greenwood who saved the life of Private Goddard at the Kabul River disaster. Surgeon-Major Cattell sits fourth from the left of the photo and Lord Ogilvy sits second from the right. They wear either the khaki or the plain blue frocks with a variety of undress headgear. Mostly they wear the blue tent hat, with or without gold lace and badges, or the pillbox cap.
