The main item shown in this group of sketches is the shoulder strap. It can be compared with the shoulder straps of 1830, and is similar in some respects. The strap itself (sometimes referred to as scales) has concave sides and is narrower so that there is only a little blue cloth showing between the gold lace edges. The silver embroidered grenade badge indicates that this is a Grenadier company officers’ strap, having no indication of rank. The embroidered thistle is more opened out than previously, to fill the space inside the gilt crescent. The Glengarry cap is viewed from the left side to show the badges. The regimental badge of St Andrew surrounded by the thistle wreath has the regimental number as separate pieces beneath, and a crown above. The crown is the rank badge of a lieutenant-colonel (Lauderdale Maule). Next to the cap is another version of the badge as worn by an officer in the Light Company. The drawings on the top and middle left are of the hilt of the sword carried by mounted officers, and the cuff of the frock-coat which has two small gilt buttons.
