On 28 February 1975 the officers and men of the 1st Battalion KOSB were presented with new Colours at the Deutschlandhalle, Berlin. The Presentation was made by HRH Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, Colonel-in-Chief of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers. She is seen here with the ensign holding the Regimental Colour.
It is unusual to see a mounted officer of the regiment at this date. He may be the second-in-command, as the CO and Colonel of the regiment, Brigadier Coutts, appear to be standing at the top of the red carpeted steps. The sergeant standing behind Princess Alice is dressed for mounted duty, wearing boots and breeches instead of trousers and white spats. He is probably the orderly responsible for the horse.
The photo was published in Borderers in Uniform from 1689 by kind permission of the author, Hiram Dunn, former Warrant Officer of the Regiment. The text says that the Regiment were presented with new Colours every 25 years. The ceremony took place shortly before the KOSB were posted to Palace Barracks, Northern Ireland.
