Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Stewart was a British military engineer who played a key role in the development and operation of telegraph systems in India during the mid-19th century. A graduate of Addiscombe Military Seminary, Stewart served in several major public works projects before being appointed Director-General of Telegraphs in 1856, succeeding Sir William O’Shaughnessy.
Stewart’s appointment came at a critical time, as the East India Company was expanding its telegraph network to improve communication across the subcontinent. The system included thousands of miles of wire connecting Calcutta, Bombay, Madras, Agra, and Peshawar. Telegraph lines were often laid alongside major roads and railway routes, and required constant maintenance due to environmental damage and interference.
During the Indian Mutiny of 1857, Stewart’s leadership proved essential. Telegraph lines were repeatedly targeted by rebel forces, and Stewart oversaw their repair and reinstallation under hostile conditions. He was among the first to lay telegraph wire through active conflict zones, often working near the front lines to restore communication between military and administrative centres.
Stewart travelled with field commanders and established temporary telegraph stations wherever British forces camped. His efforts enabled rapid transmission of orders, intelligence, and troop movements, which contributed to the coordination of British responses during the rebellion. The telegraph system allowed messages to be sent across hundreds of miles in minutes, a major advantage in a campaign spread across multiple provinces.
After the Mutiny, Stewart continued to expand the telegraph network and was later tasked with connecting India to Britain via international cable. He oversaw the laying of submarine cables across the Persian Gulf and travelled to Turkey to negotiate further links. Stewart died in 1865 while on assignment, at the age of 32.
His work helped establish the telegraph as a permanent feature of British administration in India, supporting both civil governance and military operations. The infrastructure he helped build remained in use for decades and formed the basis of later communication systems across the region.
