The officer in this water-colour drawing is named as Lieutenant-Colonel Hon. Lauderdale Maule who commanded the 79th Cameron Highlanders from 1842 to 1852. Colonel Maule was sketched by Auguste Raffet at Gibraltar on 14th or 15th September 1847. This copy is by Percy Sumner. The officer wears a plain blue frock-coat which is single-breasted, buttoned up with 8 gilt regimental buttons. There are two smaller buttons on each cuff, not visible here. The shoulder straps are blue, edged with gold lace and had an embroidered thistle inside the gilt crescent, and an embroidered Victorian crown on the strap.
He wears white summer trousers that were exchanged for trews in October, for the winter months. He has ankle boots and spurs as he is one of three officers in the regiment that is mounted on horseback for parades and marches; the other two being the second-in-command and the adjutant. Because of his mounted role he has a normal infantry sword in a steel scabbard slung from a black leather waist-belt. He has a blue glengarry cap with a badge on the left side fixed to a black silk square. His crimson silk sash is worn on the left shoulder. The plaid or scarf was not worn in this order of dress.
